1993 Seiko 7T27-7A20 'Gen 2' RAF/RN aircrew issue quartz chronograph
Ex-MoD - very early example
£645.00
The Seiko 'Gen 2' won the MoD contract for an aircrew chronograph, and became the successor to the renowned 7A28 'Gen 1'. The Gen 2 contains the next generation analogue quartz chronograph movement, which in contrast to the 7A28 is largely made of plastic, but nevertheless is fully serviceable and can be stripped to its component parts for cleaning and repair. As well as a chronograph and date indicator the Gen 2 also includes a useful 24 hour indicator sub-register at the 9 position.
The Gen 2 was produced from 1993 - 2000 with a total of around 6750 supplied to the Ministry of Defence for aircrew in all arms. In 1993 an estimated total of 1300 were supplied.
The very early watches had the case back markings stamped, exactly like the earlier Gen 1 chronographs. Subsequent batches were engraved and then etched. This example, serial number 0251/93 is just the 251st Gen 2 issued and has the characteristic stamped marks of the earliest Gen 2s. One other distinguishing feature is that the early production watches were marked 'Japan' on teh lower edge of the dial, with matching 'Japan' marked on the bottom edge of the case back, as seen on this example. Later batches have 'Mov't Japan' marked on the dial and case back.
This watch has never been traded on the civilian market before. The watch was fully recommissioned with complete strip-down, clean and service in October 2026 as described in the condition report.
All round an excellent example, supplied on a new het-bonded black and grey striped 'James Bond' 20mm NATO strap.
This example is in excellent cosmetic condition - with only light signs of use and minor marks to the case. The case back has surface marks including light strap burn and a small scrape on the left hand side, but overall is very good. The 1993 watches had several different styles of caseback markings. Initially they were stamped, like the earlier Gen 1s, and then they changed to engraved markings. This example, being one of the very early watches, has the stamped markings. The dial and hands are in excellent condition. The crystal is a replacement and is unmarked. Please refer to the images to make your own judgement about the condition of the watch. Mechanically the watch was overhauled in October 2026. The watch had a full stripdown, clean and service, with new pusher, crown and back gaskets and new OEM nylon crystal gasket. Images of the rebuild have been included in the listing.
The case parts were stripped including removal of the pushers, and ultrasonically cleaned. The pusher gaskets have been replaced, greased and the pushers refitted. The movement was fully stripped, mechanically and ultrasonically cleaned using waterless solutions and hot air dried. The movement was rebuilt and lubricated in accordance with the Seiko technical manual and a new 395 battery was fitted.
The watch has been fully tested and is in full working order with all functions operating correctly including chronograph start, stop and reset, 24 hour indicator register, date quickset and automatic date advance, and manual chronograph start position adjustment.
The watch is absolutely suitable for everyday use, but it is vintage watch so is not recommended for sports or use in extreme conditions. The watch has not been pressure tested so water resistance is not guaranteed. This watch is covered by our non-waterproof 6 month guarantee.
