The Seiko 'Gen 2' won the MoD contract for an aircrew chronograph, and became the successor to the renowned 7A28 'Gen 1'. The Gen 2 contains the next generation analogue quartz chronograph movement, which in contrast to the 7A28 is largely made of plastic, but nevertheless is fully serviceable and can be stripped to its component parts for cleaning and repair. As well as a chronograph and date indicator the Gen 2 also includes a useful 24 hour indicator sub-register at the 9 position.
The Gen 2 was produced from 1993 - 2000 with a total of around 6750 supplied to the Ministry of Defence for aircrew in all arms. In 1993 an estimated total of 1300 were supplied.
The majority of watches supplied to UK MoD used Promethium luminous compound on dial and hands, signified by a circled 'P' on the dial, and bearing the Nato Stock Number (NSN) 8149181 on the case back. Much smaller numbers were procured for use on Royal Navy nuclear submarines which had no luminous material on the dial or hands, this being replaced by inert white paint. The dial is absent the circled P on the dial and the case back bears the NSN 7208727, specific to non-lume watches.
This example dates to year 2000, during which and estimated 525 examples were issued, although the known serial number range indicates 473 units, of which many fewer have survived.
The watch is in excellent condition as described in the condition report and is fitted with a NOS 1990s-2000s admiralty grey MoD issue NATO strap.
This example is in excellent cosmetic condition - with only light signs of use and minor marks to the case. The case back has surface marks including light strap burn. The crystal is in excellent condition. The dial and hand look in mint condition. Please refer to the images to make your own judgement about the condition of the watch. The images form an important part of the description
Mechanically the watch is in excellent condition. The movement, which has been inspected is very clean indeed, looking in as-new condition, with no evidence of dirt, corrosion or battery residue. The battery and gaskets have been replaced.
The watch has been fully tested and is in full working order with all functions operating correctly including chronograph start, stop and reset, 24 hour indicator register, date quickset and automatic date advance, and manual chronograph start position adjustment.
The watch is absolutely suitable for everyday use, but it is vintage watch so is not recommended for sports or use in extreme conditions. The watch has not been pressure tested so water resistance is not guaranteed. This watch is covered by our non-waterproof 6 month guarantee.
