Lemania HS9 monopusher chronograph - cal. 15CHT

Resissued to Royal Navy (0552)

£2950.00

Out of stock

Towards the end of WW2 the Hydrographic Survey Unit of the Royal Navy were issued with what became known and the 'Series 1' Lemania monopusher chronographs. The stores code for these watches was HS9, and that has become synonymous with these watches.

The high grade Lemania chronograph movement, includes a chronograph sweep seconds hand and a minute counter in the right hand sub-dial. The chronograph starts, stops and reset from the single pusher button above the crown on the right hand side of the case.

The original dials and hands used radium luminous compound and in the post-war years these were replaced by dials and hands with tritium luminous compound, as signified by the circled T on the dial. The original movements are not shock protected, but some were converted to the Incabloc shock protection system in the post-war period, and some of these had a dial variant with 'Incabloc' marked on it. Strangely these 'Incabloc' tritium dials appear to have been fitted quite frequently to watches that were not converted to Incabloc.

This particular watch has the earlier post-war dial variant with the circled T but not with 'Incabloc' marked, and this is consistent with the movement which does not have Incabloc shock protection.

In the post war years, many of the HS9s, presumably after refurbishment, were re-issued with the Ministry of Defence service code for the Royal Navy - 0552, along with the NATO stock number, and the original designation struck through, which is the case with this example.

This watch also has the fixed bars which also seem to have been quite commonly replaced (or possibly not originally fitted).

The watch is in very good cosmetic and mechanical condition, having been the subject of a full stripdown and service, as described in the condition report.

Cosmetically the watch is in very good, clean conidtion with only minor marks from use.

The crystal is very good and unmarked. The dial and hands are also in very good condition.

Please refer to the images to make your own judgement about the condition of the watch. The images form an important part of the description.

The original Lemania cal 15CHT movement is in nice clean condition and was fully serviced in July 2024, including a new mainspring. The movement was fully stripped, mechanically and ultrasonically cleaned using  waterless solutions and hot air dried. It was reassembled, lubricated and regulated. Images from the service are included in the listing.

Amplitude is 275+ degrees, beat error is 0.6ms and accuracy is within around +/-5 seconds per day (on the bench, this may differ when worn). The chronograph is fully functional and starts, stops and resets from the pusher, with the minute recorder correctly registering elapsed minutes. The service was photo documented and images have been added to the listing, including an image of the watch on the timegrapher showing the readings. The watch adjusts correctly from the crown.

The watch is supplied on a grey ribbed NATO strap.

The watch is absolutely suitable for everyday use, but it is vintage watch so is not recommended for sports or use in extreme conditions. The watch has not been pressure tested so water resistance is not guaranteed. This watch is covered by our non-waterproof 6 month guarantee.
