Towards the end of WW2 the Hydrographic Survey Unit of the Royal Navy were issued with what became known and the 'Series 1' Lemania monopusher chronographs. The stores code for these watches was HS9, and that has become synonymous with these watches.

The high grade Lemania 15 CHT chronograph movement fitted, includes a chronograph sweep seconds hand and a minute counter in the right hand sub-dial. The chronograph starts, stops and reset from the single pusher button above the crown on the right hand side of the case.

In the post war years, many of the HS9s were refurbished, with the original radium lume replaced with tritium, and were re-issued with the Ministry of Defence service code for the Royal Navy - 0552.

In the 1950s the Series 1 monopusher was superseded by the almost identical Series 2. These featured the same 15CHT movement, but have a black dial (the majority of Series 1 watches were issued with white dials) and a chunkier case back with more conventional arrangement for case back removal. The series 1 required a special tool whereas the Series 2 has 6 square recesses to fit common workshop case back opening tools. The series 2 was itself superseded by the Series 3 which featured an asymmetric case of different design to the Series 1 & 2 cases. Of the 3 types, the Series 2 watches are thought to be the rarest.

This example of a Series 2 is in good cosmetic and mechanical condition, having been the subject of a full stripdown and service, as described in the condition report.

At the time of listing only one other Series 2 can be found for sale on any platform, which is in unserviced condition and at a significantly higher price. Why buy a watch for more when you can buy a better one for less?

Cosmetically the watch is in very good, clean condition with general minor marks from use.

The crystal is very good, with minor marks but absolutely useable. The dial and hands are also in very good condition. The Lume dial plots and lumed 12 and 6 numerals are all in good shape and have a nice aged buff tritium colkour. The lume on the hands has aged to a darker grey/green colour.

Please refer to the images to make your own judgement about the condition of the watch. The images form an important part of the description.

The original Lemania cal 15CHT movement is in nice clean condition and was fully serviced in April 2026, including a new mainspring. The movement was fully stripped, mechanically and ultrasonically cleaned using  waterless solutions and hot air dried. It was reassembled, lubricated and regulated. Images from the service are included in the listing.

Amplitude is 270+ degrees, beat error is 0.8ms and accuracy is within +/-5 seconds per day on the bench. This may differ when worn or subsequent to servicing - please read the accuracy notes below. The chronograph is fully functional and starts, stops and resets from the pusher, with the minute recorder correctly registering elapsed minutes. The service was photo documented and images have been added to the listing, including an image of the watch on the timegrapher showing the readings. The watch adjusts correctly from the crown.

The watch is supplied on a very nice khaki cordura-type NATO strap.

The watch is absolutely suitable for everyday use, but it is vintage watch so is not recommended for sports or use in extreme conditions. The watch has not been pressure tested so water resistance is not guaranteed. This watch is covered by our non-waterproof 6 month guarantee.
