This is a very nice example of a Record WWW (Watch, Wristlet, Waterproof) supplied to the British War Department towards the end of the Second World War. Contracts to the same specification were let to 12 manufacturers, of which Record was one, of what became known as the 'Dirty Dozen'. Much has been written about these watches and there are many sources of information on the internet. Around 25000 Record WWWs were supplied.
The WWW watches were originally supplied with radium lume on the dial and hands. May of them were subject to post-war refurbishment, during which the original radium dials and hands were updated to tritium dials and hands. The Record WWWs in particular seems to have quite been fitted with quite a range of different MoD service dials, with different finishes, different colour lume and different dial signatures, including some with a 'VB' stores code and later NATO stock code instead of the 'Record' signature. This example has a fairly standard tritium service dial and hands.
The watch is in good cosmetic condition and recently serviced, as described in the condition report.
Cosmetically the watch is in very good, clean condition and the case and back are in good original condition. There are some marks to the mid-case but little sign of 'brassing' (the case is plated brass and it is common to see wear/deterioration of the plating with the brass showing through). The case back is in good condition, with some strap burn and surface marks.
The crystal is good and has the correct underlay profile. The crystal has been buffed to remove minor surface scratches, but there are still some marks, although the crystal is absolutely useable.
The dial is an MoD tritium service dial with with characteristic 'peppermint' lume plots and in near perfect condition. The hands are also in very good condition with polished frames and tritium lume.
Please refer to the images to make your own judgement about the condition of the watch. The images form an important part of the description.
The original cal.022K movement is in very clean condition and was fully serviced in May 2025, including a new mainspring. The movement was fully stripped, mechanically and ultrasonically cleaned using waterless solutions and hot air dried. It was reassembled, lubricated and regulated. Images from the service are included in the listing.
Amplitude is 300+ degrees, beat error is 0.3ms and accuracy is within around +5 seconds per day (on the bench, this may differ when worn). The service was photo documented and images have been added to the listing, including an image of the watch on the timegrapher showing the readings. The watch adjusts correctly from the crown.
The watch is supplied on a vintage new black ribbed NATO strap.
The watch is absolutely suitable for everyday use, but it is vintage watch so is not recommended for sports or use in extreme conditions. The watch has not been pressure tested so water resistance is not guaranteed. This watch is covered by our non-waterproof 6 month guarantee.
