Smiths Mk 5 '8 day' MoD issue cockpit clock with stopwatch
Decommissioned Royal Navy cockpit clock - working order
£225.00
Out of stock
The Smiths Mk5 cockpit clock was introduced in the 1950s and remained in use right up to the early 2000s at least - there are are probably still airframes in use with Mk5 clocks fitted.
The clocks have hours and minutes hands for the main time register, and have a stop-clock with centre sweep seconds hand and sub-register minute counter. The top right knob is used to wind the clock and if pulled out will hack the clock and adjust the time. The bottom left knob is used to start, stop and reset the stop-clock.
Inside is the Smiths cal. 5000 clock movement, a thing of beauty in its own right.
These clocks were fitted to a wide variety of aircraft types, including Hercules, Sea King helicopters and Dominie jets.
This example was manufactured in 1966 and is likely to have been fitted to a series of different airframes before it was eventually fitted to a Sea King HC4 helicopter, serial number ZF119. Images of this actual aircraft can easily be found online - we don't have the rights to reproduce the images but there are a number of pictures on various other sites such as this one https://www.helis.com/database/cn/11673/
The clock was removed from the aircraft and decommissioned due to faults and the clock comes with the the MOD Form 731 showing the clock as unserviceable, and which documents the aircraft type, serial number and the serial number of the clock. The listed faults are with the stopwatch not resetting correctly, which has been rectified.
These are lovely little clocks, just oozing character. They make a great addition to your desk, workshop, office, den etc.
This clock has not been serviced, but it has been opened up and checked. The glass has been removed, cleaned and replaced and the movement has been regulated and any faults documented on the MOD Form 731 have been rectified. Timekeeping on these varies from clock to clock but this one will keep time within a few minutes per day, and the stopwatch starts, stops and resets correctly.
Cosmetically the clock is in good 'vintage' condition, with various markings and stickers on the case, including the MoD stamped markings on the case back. There is a foil sticker with the clock serial number as well as another with the NATO stock number and labels from 'Pandect' who had the contract to maintain aircraft instruments.
